Hair today, gone tomorrow~

My sister and I had both been itching to cut our locks after the wedding. Here's a before shot taken at the bachelorette party~ Stone Hill Winery in Hermann, MO.

I cannot figure this picture out as I am actually a bit taller than her and we both had on flip flops with the same height... hmmm.... did you stand on your tippies at the last second Sis or is that old floor that warped, lol!
For those who may be wondering, we are 13 years apart.

Jonna knew she was going chin length. She liked the pic on the bottom right, only not so short around the face. (click to enlarge)
I was so excited to start cutting!!
Say buh-bye!
AYE-AYE-AYE-AYE-AYE!!!!

Jonna's hair is incredibly thick. I mean really, REALLY thick. I razored it quite a bit to soften, but if you razor or thin it out too much it can make thick hair even more poofy; and make the layers lay funny.

Cutting all the weight off unleashed some great natural wave. She'll be able to scrunch it and difuse it for a different look.

Here I dried it using a hot air brush by Conair. This is my old brush that she uses at home. The newer ones have soft bristles to help grab the hair. If you are able to use a round brush and separate dryer, that's great! But these are wonderful if you aren't that coordinated.

There's nothing like a big round brush for volume and lift. Use the largest one you can fit in your hair if you don't want any curl.

After I dried it I went over the bottom layers with a flat iron. (I use a Chi iron in the salon)

Ta-dah!

No more tangles!! LOL!

Here are some more befores of mine. I admit, I'm rather missing it now~ but I'm still glad I cut it. I really only liked it when I curled it... and had to sleep in rollers then sit under the dryer for an hour the next day!
So you can guess I didn't do it often.

Straight and natural~

Red fades so quickly, I wish it would stay like this!

See the diffrence in fading in a month? Geesh. This was taken on the 4th of July.
And here's the after. I lopped off about 8 inches too. I slept in rollers the night before this pic~
Dress is vintage, late 40's-early 40's. My pockets are stuffed with my cell phone and junk; can you imagine that back then? LOL!

You'll hafta click to enlarge if ya wanna see the back. Not that exciting. The same, just shorter!
Uh oh!
Bathroom snapper!

This is in the Japanese garden at the Missouri Botanical Gardens, or Shaw's Garden.

Be sure to stop by Sheila's at Note Songs for more

I scrunched my natural wave here~

And threw in some victory rolls for this shot.

Whew, what a load off!

Tales of a shoe hoarder, Episode Nine~

These boots are made for walkin'!

Cheap faux suede slouch boots. I don't remember where I bought them, probably Walmart or Payless. Very comfy!

I like to wear them with my hippy/bellydancer/gypsy outfit. LOL! Most of my *ensembles* are very cheap. I usually only shop clearance racks. Each peice probably cost $5 or less, including the earrings. I definitely don't like to pay over $10 for anything. This skirt is just TOO much fun. I got it at Rue 21.

And such an outfit must be finished off with the proper hippy/bellydancer/gypsy hairdo...

(Especially if one is a hairstylist like moi!)

This is a very easy do, and I did this one quite hastily. It's sloppy and I didn't get it even in the back but oh well. Three minutes and I'm out the door...

Starting in front, grab a section of hair near the temple. Take a section just underneath it, and twist it over the top of the first section. As you go down, add hair to the bottom section before twisting over top. For this do, I stop at the ears, and keep twisting the loose strands to form a rope. I secure one finished side with a tiny clip to my scalp(otherwise it will come unwound). After twisting other side I bring both tails together and tie them with an elastic. I then flip the tail all the way over, towards my head.
Great for Renaissance Fairs! Here I twisted all the way down the sides, then secured both sides together with an elastic at the nape; made a bun and pinned.

Vintage Hair Flair

Howdy folks~
A few of you have asked how I did my hair in the
Cherries Jubilee post. I had slept in pillow rollers. Mine are from Goody, they're white with rectangular foam centers and wire ends to bend. I also use the good ol' pink sponge rollers, but pillows are easier to sleep on and give a more natural looking curl. I usually spray my hair with Aussie Hair Insurance, and if needed I'll use Paul Mitchel Super Sculpt as a setting gel.
You may have to use end papers to be able to roll your hair smoothly. These can be found at Walmart and such. Pin curls were usually the real vintage way and I just haven't taken the time to master it on myself. I haven't done them since beauty school.

Depending on how long I've had the rollers in, sometimes I still have to sit under the dryer for about a half hour when I wake up. My hair is all one length and thick. You can find the domed table top style dryers and bonnet dryers cheap at yard sales and such. They're also on ebay and new versions can be found at Sally Beauty Supply, Amazon, and sometimes Walmart and the like.

This shows the length of my hair at the time of this waved set. It was a few inches longer for the cherry do. I had just cut it here, that's my natural wave just scrunched, and a few victory rolls. Wow, I look like a ghost here... did I forget my blush?!

HPIM1646

Here you'll see a *lovely* makeup-less me sporting my pillows, along with some vintage fingerwave clips. For a normal set I'd have pillow rollers where the wave clips are. My hair was about shoulder length at this time, and it really shrinks up after curling.

I woke up at about 5 AM and couldn't take those wave clips any longer! I looked in the mirror and thought, wow... my hair looks awesome, I'd better take a picture! LOL! This was after a fresh color job as well. See how much it shrinks?! If I wanted to keep this look I would bobby pin the curls to my head and not brush them out. The lovely Miss Iris has a new video on how to do the 20's-30's look by pinning curls close to the head to look like a bob, and I will post that here as well.
Here it is brushed out, (curls only, not the waves!) You'll hafta click to enlarge.
I'm sporting a vintage skirt with Scotties on it, and vintage blouse. There's that $3 Charlotte Russe sweater again. I didn't know you could see my shirt thru it till I saw the pics. Oh well!

Here's another version, no wave clips this time... same roller set. I was trying (AGAIN) to do the Vivien Leigh/Scarlett raised eyebrow. I just look rediculous and mean when I do it. So I photoshopped a bit. Wish my hair looked this red all of the time!

Where's the red? LOL~

This was a set with the large pink sponge rollers. My hair was past my bra strap when I did this. It's pretty but doesn't look as vintage, too spirally. That's why I prefer it shorter. Besides, it takes for-ev-ah to dry when it's this long, which is how it is right now.

Slept in large sponge rollers, used end papers, rolled with NO tension. Sat under dryer for a half hour next day.

As promised, here is Iris! This video is adorable. Enjoy!

Beautiful weekend~

WOW, the weather has been so incredibly beautiful here this week. Hovering around 77 degrees. We even turned our air off and just ran the attic fan. Lovely breeze...very unusual for this time of year in Missouri!

Good thing because I wanted to wear these fab wool vintage navy sailor pants on the 4th! And the Rosie 'do complimented them nicely I think~

The blouse looks pink here but it's actually a fine red and white stripe.

You can't tell from the photo, but the buttons have little anchors on them. And the back laces up. Judging from the label I believe these are from the 60's or 70's.

Some friends of ours have been hosting an annual 4th of July party. They have a great old home. Here's a pic from the realtor when they bought it a few years ago. They live a few blocks away from the Missouri River. We can sit on the hill of their front yard and watch the fireworks.

These are pics of their home from 2 years ago. I love their kitchen! It was like that when they moved in...sans all the party paraphernalia of course, lol! They get quite a house full.

Here is their back yard. Isn't this wisteria AMAZING! Rue, this is just what you need over your pergola at the Williams house! Unfortunately, I've never been here to see it bloom~ I'm sure it's spectacular.
The home still has the orginal slate roof.
I love this gate.

See that big tree haning over the roof of the garage? It's a Holly tree! It must be a zillion years old. Just covered with berries in the winter; gorgeous!!
Here are the kiddos running through the smoke bomb funk, phew!
At last it was time for fireworks! I didn't get any pictures, but this is picture is from the parade last week. This is how Nova was during the fireworks, eyes tightly shut plus tears. I don't know what was different this year but he was affraid of the sirens at the parade, and fireworks too. He loved them last year! So we sat inside the house and watched from there. At least he had fun playing outside pre-fireworks!

SEE? He was amazed by the fireworks last year.
We'll have to see what happens next July 4th. Yesterday Kevin took him fishing for the first time. They had a blast. Today they'll probably go swimming while I paint more beadboard for the bathroom.

And before I go, here's a closeup of the hair. This was after we got home tho, and I was tired! I've cut bangs so I did them "mall" style as I didn't want a weenie roll and my bangs don't hold curl well.

And I am so excited that at least one of you was inspired and tried the 'do! The lovely Mamselle Duroc at Classic Vintage Beauty. Isn't she a doll?
