What did you do all day?

Speaking of housewives, if you have not yet seen The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio you must. It is based the true story of Evelyn Ryan. Her daughter wrote a book about her and their lives... how she raised 10 children on "25 words or less".

Of course, having 1 or 2 kids is nothing compared to 10. Especially in those days without modern conveniences. Just to get a glimpse back in time to see she always did her hair, wore a girdle and dress every day, etc.... meanwhile running a huge household makes you realize how much things have changed.

After seeing the clips of the Time Warp Wives and how happy and perfect they seemed to be, we just have to remember that life is not always so perfect. This movie certainly proves it.

I'd like to read the book too, hint-hint... (Christmas!!)

Talking about hair made me think of Evelyn and this photo of her, where she says she forgot to comb out her hair.... lol... but it looks gorgeous!

I remember when my mother used to put those aluminum wave clips in her hair to create that look Evelyn has going on for her. I found a couple of clips to put in my guest bath just for a reminder. Have a nice weekend.

I love that movie. Ok Nikki, you can go see my vintage hair....and glasses. Well, I don't know if you can really see the hair....click on the pic and it makes it bigger. I spiraled it w/ a tiny straightener. I think it might be a too layered to pin curl. I'm going to find some of those wave clamps.....do they have them at Sally's? Thanks!!!

Omg! How wild to read that! Defiance, Ohio, is where I live! Yes, I have seen the movie and it was great. I can't believe it didn't get more attention since it had an all star cast!

Anyhow, a little bit of history: the house they bought with the prize money on Washington Street is still standing! It's not a small house, but not a big one either and it's hard to imagine raising a family that big there! It looks surprisingly like the one in the movie. The movie itself was not shot in Defiance, but somewhere in Canada, but there really is a bridge going over a big river as you head into the downtown area. One of Evelyn Ryan's sons, the youngest I think, still lives in Defiance. All of the others located. The daughter who wrote the book passed away of cancer just within this past year, and her funeral was in this city and she is buried here. I think that all the surviving Ryan clan returned to pay their respects. I'm not real sure of this, but the Chief Supermarket where she wins the free groceries is not the current one that stands, but was in a different location, and it might be the same building where I work! I am not sure of that as I just moved to Defiance a year and a half ago, but my office building was at one time a supermarket.

So if anyone wonders if there really is a Defiance, Ohio, yes there is! I live there! And there really was an Evelyn Ryan and the book is true!

The book about Evelyn was really heartwarming. She had such a triumphant cheerful spirit through some really hard times. Very inspiring! I enjoyed reading your post. Always something fun to see on your blog. Thank you!

Oh I read that book it was great.
I love how she entered and won all those contests. I am never that lucky. She did have a very hard life though.
